€2.3 Million Project to Repair Aging Stormwater Culvert Under Nicosia Avenue Begins
A €2.3 million project to repair and reinforce a 50-year-old stormwater culvert beneath Digeni Akrita Avenue in Nicosia is set to commence, the Nicosia district government organisation (EOA) announced. The culvert, which carries the Kotsirkas river, has suffered significant corrosion over decades and will be strengthened using modern reinforced concrete methods. The contract was awarded to C. Roushas Trading and Development Ltd and is expected to last 28 weeks.
The project’s funding is two-thirds covered by the state, with the remaining portion funded by the EOA through stormwater fees collected from property owners. EOA chairman Constantinos Yiorkadjis emphasized the organisation’s commitment to improving stormwater infrastructure to reduce flooding and ensure traffic safety. He also noted plans for additional interventions in other problematic areas of Nicosia district.
Following recent floods, cooperation between Nicosia municipality and EOA has improved to address longstanding drainage issues. The government has also approved financial aid for uninsured homeowners affected by the August 29 storms, with preliminary reports indicating structural damage to 183 homes in the Nicosia district.
