Cyprus is seeking a swift political decision on its accession to the European Union's border-free Schengen zone, President Nikos Christodoulides announced. Following a positive assessment from the European Commission recommending the priority examination of Cyprus’ request, the decision now rests with the EU member states' Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council. The commission is expected to present its "State of Schengen" report to the Council of the European Union within the coming weeks, reinforcing Cyprus' readiness for full Schengen membership.
The decision requires unanimous approval from the 25 Schengen states within the EU; currently, only Cyprus and Ireland remain outside the zone among EU members. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been a prominent advocate for Cyprus’ inclusion, urging member states to support the island despite longstanding political complexities associated with the Cyprus dispute.
However, concerns remain over the implementation of Schengen’s digital entry/exit system at the island's nine crossing points between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman emphasized the importance of involving the Turkish Cypriot community in the accession talks, warning that Schengen entry could complicate freedom of movement, particularly for those without Republic of Cyprus citizenship.
