Cyprus showcases innovative maritime technology at Hamburg's SMM exhibition
Cyprus highlighted its home-grown maritime technology at the Cyprus Maritime Innovation Event during the SMM Hamburg exhibition, which took place from September 1 to 4. Local companies presented advanced tools aimed at enhancing ship safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency. The event, organised by Cyprus’ Ministry of Energy and the Shipping Deputy Ministry, featured presentations on fleet decarbonisation, digitalisation of maritime administration, and incentives to attract maritime technology businesses to Cyprus.
Representatives from the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute and various tech companies showcased collaborative research and applications of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and engineering solutions to improve vessel performance and onboard safety. A panel discussion addressed the challenges of complying with stricter environmental regulations while maintaining operational reliability amid market volatility and rapid technological change.
Cyprus used the platform to promote its maritime cluster as a hub for research, technology, and technical services beyond its traditional roles in ship registration and management, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among operators, technology providers, researchers, and regulators to foster innovation in shipping.
