Limassol’s Persistent Sea Pollution Problem Stalls Amid Bureaucratic Challenges
Limassol continues to grapple with a longstanding sea pollution issue that remains unresolved despite years of concern. Residents are increasingly frustrated as pollution prevents safe swimming along the city’s extensive coastline, with no effective measures yet implemented to tackle the problem.
Recent discussions at the Deputy Ministry of Shipping brought together all relevant agencies and local authorities to address the issue, highlighting the need to identify pollution sources such as discharge pipes, sewage plants, boats, fish farms, and rainwater runoff. However, efforts remain stalled by unclear responsibilities and fragmented actions among the 18 state agencies involved.
Charalambos Theopemptou, former Environment Commissioner, emphasized the chronic nature of the problem and criticized the state's reactive approach, urging for decisive and coordinated action rather than repeated finger-pointing. The Deputy Ministry’s new coordinating role is seen as progress, but all parties must now commit to concrete solutions to protect Limassol’s coastal waters.
