Cyprus Parliament discusses bill introducing stricter measures on dangerous buildings
The Cyprus Parliament’s Interior Committee has begun discussions on a new bill aimed at tackling the problem of dangerous buildings. The proposed legislation includes measures such as cutting off electricity and water supply, allowing for full or partial demolition, registering liens on properties, recovering support costs, and enforcing tougher penalties. The bill will also undergo a legal review to ensure compliance with the Constitution and will be discussed with relevant bodies for further refinement.
Elikkos Elia, director-general of the Interior Ministry, stated that the bill maintains owners' responsibility for repairing dangerous buildings but introduces stricter legislative provisions. Local Government Organisations (DGLOs) will intervene only in specific cases where public safety is at risk, potentially reducing the number of interventions needed. The ministry has allocated two million euros to support DLGOs in managing dangerous buildings.
Representatives from local governments highlighted funding challenges, with the president of Nicosia’s DLGO requesting a ten-year funding approval, and the Larnaca DLGO estimating a need for seven million euros to address over a thousand potentially dangerous buildings. Limassol’s DLGO reported spending 150,000 euros on two buildings since 2025, noting they had yet to receive reimbursement from the Interior Ministry.
