Cyprus Chamber of Commerce urges stronger family support to tackle demographic decline

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) has called for enhanced support for families, especially larger ones, in response to the country’s worsening demographic challenges. Following a discussion with the Pancyprian Organisation of Large Families, Keve highlighted the economic and social implications of declining birth rates, an ageing population, and an unfavourable birth-death balance.

Keve emphasized that demographic issues pose significant risks to the sustainability of Cyprus’ welfare state and economic growth. The chamber stressed that supporting families should be seen as a strategic investment for the future, with a focus on creating conditions that ease the financial and professional pressures young couples face when having children. Special attention was given to child benefits, whose eligibility criteria affect access to other support systems and are critical for large families.

The chamber also pointed to the connection between demographics and the labour market, warning that a shrinking active population could hurt businesses and the wider economy. Keve expressed willingness to support voluntary business initiatives aimed at easing the burdens on large families and pledged ongoing cooperation with the Pancyprian Organisation of Large Families to promote effective measures addressing Cyprus’ demographic challenges.
