Teachers in Cyprus Demand Unemployment Benefits During Program Gaps in Nicosia Protest
Teachers employed in education ministry support programmes held a demonstration in central Nicosia on Thursday to demand access to unemployment benefits during periods when their programmes are inactive. The protest started outside Pasydy’s offices and culminated with union representatives from Oekydy-Sek and Pasey-Peo submitting a memorandum to President Nikos Christodoulides, which was received by the presidential press office.
Union leaders reported that the government responded positively to their requests, with assurances of prompt action to address their concerns. The education ministry plans to expedite announcements for staffing the current year’s programmes and training centres, as well as speeding up the process of granting unemployment benefits.
The teachers have highlighted longstanding issues since 2012 concerning their employment terms, citing insufficient legislative solutions for fixed-term contracts this year. They urged the president to ensure unemployment benefits continue during school term breaks or provide 12 monthly salaries comparable to permanent public school teachers. Union officials warned they would escalate protests if their demands are not met but emphasized they seek fair treatment without causing public disruption.
