Student's misuse of fire extinguisher on school bus leads to driver's hospitalization amid safety concerns
During a recent House Transport Committee review, serious safety incidents on school buses were highlighted, including a student discharging a fire extinguisher inside a bus that caused the driver to faint and require hospital treatment. Other alarming reports involved the discovery of an air gun and pellets, the setting off of fireworks, vandalism, and stolen safety equipment on school buses.
Ahead of the new school year, 442 buses passed vehicle inspections by July, with an additional 319 passing afterward, while 40 buses failed checks. Authorities confirmed 761 buses have been declared for student transport, exceeding route requirements as reserves are included. The Road Transport Department has requested full fleet details from contractors to ensure compliance.
To enhance safety, the Public Passenger Transport head announced that intensive, unannounced inspections across schools will take place throughout the year, conducted by a team of ten inspectors. Contracting companies assured the Committee of their readiness to operate student routes safely for the upcoming school term.
