Turkish Cypriot caught with 14,000 undeclared cigarettes at Larnaca airport
A 57-year-old Turkish Cypriot was apprehended at Larnaca airport carrying 14,000 duty-free cigarettes in his luggage as he prepared to fly to the UK, customs officials reported Thursday. Acting on a tip, officers stopped and searched the man's luggage, uncovering 70 cartons of cigarettes without the required health warnings or traceability codes, indicating duty-free status.
The passenger was arrested and his belongings confiscated. He was later released after submitting an out-of-court settlement by paying €4,200. The seized cigarettes are set to be destroyed following standard procedures.
