Cyprus government seeks sustainable pension reform without raising contributions or retirement age

The Cyprus government is advancing its pension reform plan aiming for sustainability and adequacy without increasing contributions or raising the retirement age, Disy president Annita Demetriou stated after discussions with Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas. The reform bill is set to be submitted to the House soon, with ongoing consultations expected to refine the proposals.

The reform addresses distortions in the pension system while considering demographic and financial conditions for the next 40 years. Among key measures is a reduction in the early retirement penalty from 12% to 4.5%, along with a limit on the basic pension reduction to 7.5%, expected to boost pensions by about 6% on average for affected retirees.

Estimated to cost €24 million for current pensioners and €12 million over five years, the reform's sustainability will be reviewed after five years. Disy plans to form a working group to study the proposals, aiming for a comprehensive plan that supports retirees and workers without raising financial burdens or retirement age.
