Third vulture chick ringed in Cyprus as GPS tracking aids successful rescue
The third vulture chick born in Cyprus this year has been successfully ringed, marking significant progress in efforts to conserve the endangered species. Authorities emphasized the crucial role of ongoing monitoring in supporting the island's vulture population recovery.
Earlier this year, GPS tracking technology enabled conservation teams to locate and rescue the first chick after it became trapped in dense vegetation during its initial flight at the British bases. The young bird is now under care at the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Centre and will be released once fully recovered.
The Game and Wildlife Service, the British bases environment department, and BirdLife Cyprus highlighted that GPS transmitters are vital tools for monitoring young vultures, helping to quickly identify when they are in danger. Continued cooperation between these organizations remains essential to safeguarding these endangered birds in Cyprus.
