Fox, hare, and pheasant populations rise significantly amid increased rainfall
The populations of foxes, hares, and pheasants in Cyprus have experienced notable growth over the past year, according to the game and fauna service. Fox numbers surged by 35%, pheasants by 25%, and hares by 10%, reversing previous declining trends for the main game species. Experts attribute this rise to increased rainfall since January 2026 and delayed hay production, which have improved reproductive success for these animals.
However, the same weather conditions negatively impacted wood pigeons, resulting in a 22% population decline due to their distinct nesting habits. Despite this drop, the wood pigeon population remains stable, given its steady upward trend over the last two decades. The service also highlighted concerns about the growing fox population, which may threaten other species by limiting their growth through predation.
The data stems from the annual census conducted across survey routes in the Paphos and Larnaca districts, which also monitored stray dogs and cats. Moving forward, the game and fauna service plans to continue monitoring these wildlife populations closely and implement necessary measures within legal frameworks to maintain ecological balance.
