Cyprus Cabinet Approves Vessel Movement Restrictions and Anchorage Committee Ahead of Coastguard Establishment
The Cyprus cabinet has approved legislative amendments enabling authorities to prohibit vessels from leaving the Republic and to require them to move to safe shelters or ports. This measure serves as an interim solution while the country prepares to establish a formal coastguard. Currently, Cyprus operates a marine police force but lacks a dedicated coastguard service.
The move follows recent maritime incidents, including the sinking of two vessels off Cape Greco, which highlighted gaps in maritime safety and response. Police and the Deputy Shipping Ministry are investigating the death of 76-year-old Dimis Mavropoulos, who was aboard one of the sunken vessels, the Perla Bianca.
Additionally, the cabinet approved the formation of an anchorage committee, chaired by the Deputy Shipping Ministry, which will include representatives from relevant state agencies to enhance safety, regulate vessel presence, and manage waste at anchorages. This committee aims to unify coordination among maritime services and clarify responsibilities as Cyprus progresses toward its planned coastguard headquartered at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari.
