Cyprus Cabinet approves three new permanent desalination units to boost water supply
Cyprus's Cabinet has approved the construction of three new permanent desalination units in Dhekelia, Ayia Thekla, and Polis Chrysochous, with a combined capacity of 120,000 cubic metres per day. These units are part of a broader initiative to strengthen the country's water security and reduce reliance on rainfall and dam reserves.
The new units will complement the already approved East Limassol unit, which has a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres per day, bringing the total new desalination capacity to 180,000 cubic metres daily. The Cabinet also decided to cancel the Mobile Desalination Unit in Ayia Napa and postpone the Floating Unit in Germasogeia, pending further review of water needs and costs.
In parallel, Cyprus is moving forward with a Six-Year Desalination Plan for 2025–2031 and is preparing a Strategic Sustainability Study to explore the possibility of meeting 100% of its water needs through desalination by 2050. Final long-term plans will depend on the conclusions of this study.
