Among the casualties is Gulcan Gurel, who tragically gave her life jacket to her daughter as panic spread during the accident. Her sister Eda Payam, who survived, recounted the moment at Gurel’s funeral in Mersin, Turkey. Also mourned was Fahri Ates, a sergeant in Turkey’s gendarmerie, whose funeral took place in Erdemli with high-ranking local officials in attendance.
