EAC uncovers 110 suspected illegal photovoltaic installations in commercial properties
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has detected 110 suspected irregular photovoltaic installations at commercial sites since June, following an ongoing inspection campaign. Out of 77 on-site checks, 22 cases confirmed violations, resulting in immediate disconnection of the illegal systems. Most violations were found in sports grounds, hotels, factories, and shops, with 17 cases lacking any official installation application.
EAC spokeswoman Christina Papadopoulou highlighted a notable incident involving numerous solar panels installed at a sports ground near a main road without proper permits. She emphasized that illegal photovoltaic systems not only pose safety risks, including fire hazards, but also disrupt the electricity grid by causing unfair treatment of compliant system owners due to increased renewable energy curtailments.
The authority urges strict adherence to installation regulations to ensure safety and fairness in renewable energy management, warning that unauthorized photovoltaic setups may have serious consequences both for system owners and the wider energy network.
