Cyprus Banks Offer Lower Deposit Rates and Higher Lending Costs Compared to Euro Area Averages
The European Central Bank (ECB) reported stable borrowing costs across the euro area in July, while recent data from Cyprus highlighted a notable disparity in deposit and lending rates. Cyprus banks continued to offer significantly lower returns on fixed-term deposits—with household deposit rates at 1.42%, well below the euro area average of 2.03%. Conversely, borrowing rates for businesses and households in Cyprus remain comparatively high, with business loan rates exceeding euro area averages.
Despite lower returns for savers, deposits in Cyprus grew robustly, increasing by €562.3 million in July, driven mostly by resident deposits. At the same time, loans declined slightly due to repayments by non-residents, though household borrowing saw a moderate rise. The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) also reported that lending standards remained stable in the second quarter of 2026, with no major tightening despite expectations.
The contrasting dynamics in Cyprus’s banking sector illustrate strong balance-sheet growth but persistent gaps in the cost and return of banking services versus the broader euro area. While savers earn less on deposits, borrowers face relatively higher interest rates, particularly in corporate lending categories. Household borrowing costs have eased somewhat, yet Cyprus’s banking market remains distinct from its euro area counterparts.
