Revised Limassol Zoo Proposal to Create Educational Biodiversity Centre with No Animal Captivity
The revised proposal to transform Limassol Zoo into a Nature Biodiversity and Urban Environment Centre is back before the municipal council today. This follows the rejection of the original plan in June, which aimed to convert the zoo into an educational centre focused on the city's biodiversity and urban environment.
Mayor Yiannis Armeftis emphasized that the new plan addresses concerns raised during the previous council meeting, allowing for a limited number of mostly domestic animals, particularly birds, under non-captive conditions. Instead of cages, birds would roam freely or be contained by protective netting to ensure their welfare.
Armeftis highlighted that the core principle remains avoiding animal captivity, describing it as his personal red line. The revised proposal will be presented to all council members, with no immediate decision expected; the council will deliberate on the matter in the upcoming sessions.
