The Thalia 2021-2027 programme is driving significant improvements to public spaces throughout Cyprus, financed by a €1.8 billion public budget as part of the EU cohesion policy. Projects range from historic building restorations to new parks and university infrastructure upgrades. Notable achievements include the redevelopment of the old GSP stadium in Nicosia into a public space with an urban park, amphitheatre, and underground parking, completed at a cost of €27.3 million.
Other significant efforts include a €7.8 million restoration and expansion of the former municipal market for the CYENS centre of excellence, which has been shortlisted for a European Commission award. In Larnaca and Limassol, public parks and spaces have been modernized with investments up to €6.5 million, adding recreational facilities, playgrounds, and social service centres. Paphos has also seen major transformations including a €12.7 million restoration of the former police station into an ethnographic museum and a €20 million tourism school development at the technical university.
Further works are ongoing, such as the €10.4 million redevelopment of the moat around Nicosia’s old Venetian walls, scheduled for completion in 2027. These projects exemplify the EU’s aim to reduce regional disparities by supporting sustainable urban regeneration and infrastructure enhancement in Cyprus.
