Second deep-sea rescue vessel TCG Alemdar to join ferry search off Kyrenia
A second advanced deep-sea rescue vessel, the TCG Alemdar, will arrive off the coast of Kyrenia on Wednesday to assist in the search for the ferry that sank off northern Cyprus on Sunday. The ship, capable of conducting searches at depths of up to 3,000 meters, will join the TCG Isin, which has been conducting operations since Tuesday morning. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman emphasized that the search process will be slow but persistent, with efforts focused on reaching the sunken ferry and recovering any evidence, including the black box.
The ferry’s sinking has raised conflicting accounts of the incident. The captain, Mustafa Oz, testified that waves broke the front of the boat, while passengers reported the ferry was taking on water shortly after departing and that Oz refused to turn back when requested. Families of the 20 missing individuals continue to await updates outside the new port of Kyrenia as search operations intensify with the arrival of the second vessel.
