European Parliament backs funding for monument honoring 1974 Cyprus rape victims
The European Parliament’s committee on women’s rights (FEMM) approved an amendment calling for European Commission funding for a monument commemorating rape victims of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The proposal, submitted by Disy MEP Loukas Fourlas, aims to recognize and preserve the memory of women subjected to sexual violence during the conflict.
The monument is intended to bring greater awareness to these victims' experiences at the European level. The Cypriot government has already approved the construction of the monument, with support from Nicosia’s mayor for a central location. The amendment specifically requests collaboration between the European Commission and Cyprus for financing.
Estimates suggest that up to 1,500 Greek Cypriot women and children faced rape and related abuses during Operation Attila by Turkish forces, a scale of violence that influenced the Orthodox Church to temporarily lift its ban on abortion after the war. The initiative underscores the importance of preserving these painful memories as part of history.
