Excavations Reveal Large Central Building and Tombs at Ancient Erimi Site
Archaeologists have uncovered the layout of a large central building at the ancient Erimi site, featuring six rooms in its east and west wings, a central courtyard, and evidence of a second storey. The approximately 250-square-metre building shows successive phases of use and includes a narrow passage, symmetrical rooms, and notable carvings identified as senet-type board games on a wide threshold.
The excavation, led by an Italian archaeological mission under Professor Luca Bombardieri of the University of Siena, also revealed an underground storage space and the adaptation of earlier structures, including massive walls and an elongated floor plan. Researchers found evidence of a staircase connecting to an upper floor and uncovered a possibly residential section with post-hole carvings indicating temporary wooden structures.
In addition to the central building, the team examined part of the southern necropolis, fully investigating three chamber tombs. One tomb displayed complex funerary architecture with a secondary internal entrance and bench, suggesting a sophisticated burial program from the site's final Middle Bronze Age phase.
