Cypriot doctors trained in UK face Brexit-related qualification recognition barriers in Cyprus
Two Cypriot doctors trained and certified in the UK find themselves unable to return home to work as personal doctors under Cyprus’s General Healthcare System (GHS) due to non-recognition of their British general practice qualifications. Despite being registered on the Cyprus medical register, they are classified as "unspecialised," disqualifying them from serving as personal doctors because Cyprus requires a four-year specialist qualification, while the UK system is three years. A parliamentary proposal to resolve this issue was rejected earlier this year, leaving the problem unresolved.
The couple points out that other European countries, including Greece, have adapted procedures to recognise three-year UK specialisations since Brexit. The Cyprus Medical Association acknowledges the broader implications of Brexit on medical professionals and has committed to collaborating with the Cyprus Medical Council to find solutions. The doctors warn that without updated recognition frameworks, many Cypriot medical professionals trained in the UK may face difficult choices about returning home or continuing careers abroad.
