Bluetongue Virus Outbreak in Cyprus Sheep Farms Confirmed in Larnaca and Paphos Districts
Cyprus’s Veterinary Services reported outbreaks of bluetongue virus serotype 4 (BTV-4) in sheep at two farms in the Larnaca and Paphos districts between October and November 2025. The virus, transmitted exclusively by insect vectors such as midges and mosquitoes, affected six sheep out of 157 susceptible animals. These are the first cases of BTV-4 in Cyprus following its previous eradication.
The Veterinary Services have implemented all necessary measures to prevent further spread and are urging farmers to observe their flocks closely for early symptoms. These include high fever, lethargy, swelling around the face, nasal discharge, mouth sores, and lameness. Authorities emphasized that bluetongue does not pose a risk to humans and cannot be transmitted through consumption of meat or dairy products.
Recommendations to protect animals include using approved insect repellents, regularly spraying stables with insecticides, limiting grazing during peak insect activity, and controlling animal movements. The Veterinary Services continue surveillance to contain the outbreak and safeguard Cyprus’s livestock industry.
