Middle Education Teachers Start Tomorrow; Ongoing Discussions on Teacher Appointment System Reform
Middle Education teachers in Cyprus will begin their duties tomorrow, Tuesday, while primary education teachers will report to schools on Monday, September 7. Classes for Middle Education—covering both general and technical vocational training—will commence on September 7, with Primary Education lessons beginning a week later on September 14. Alongside the new school year, discussions continue regarding the reform of the Teacher Appointment System. The Minister of Education, Athina Michailidou, is scheduled to meet with key education unions, including POED and OLTEK, to address questions and concerns raised about the current system.
Last week, following an executive board meeting, the president of POED, Myria Vasileiou, highlighted a series of issues to be discussed with the ministry for clear responses. Similarly, the teachers' union OELMEK has reviewed the ministry's proposed modernization plan and urged revisions to avoid new inequalities or injustices. OELMEK emphasized their willingness to contribute constructively to reforms that ensure meritocracy, transparency, and effective staffing, warning of possible strong opposition if fundamental conditions are not met. The Minister reaffirmed commitment to ongoing dialogue aimed at sustainable solutions for the public school system.
