Storm Causes Significant Damage to Vineyards, Greenhouses, and Photovoltaic Installations in Paphos District
The agriculture ministry has dispatched inspectors to evaluate the damage caused by Saturday’s storm, which featured hail and strong winds, impacting vineyards and seasonal crops in the Paphos district. The assessment aims to determine fair compensation for affected farmers. Agriculture ministry permanent secretary Andreas Gregoriou noted the country's frequent extreme weather events contribute to such agricultural challenges.
Damage was particularly severe between Argaka and Pomos, where greenhouses and photovoltaic installations were significantly affected, according to Polis Chrysochous mayor Yiotis Papachristofi. Meanwhile, Ayia Marina Chrysochous deputy mayor Patroklos Evangelou reported that alongside the beneficial rainfall, strong winds caused extensive harm to homes, photovoltaic systems, approximately six greenhouses, and crops such as avocados and mangoes.
Evangelou urged prompt government action and local authorities' involvement to thoroughly assess and document the damage, enabling timely compensation for the farmers who are now facing substantial losses.
