Justice Minister Proposes New Laws to Ban Boat Departures in Dangerous Weather Following Cape Greco Tragedy
Justice Minister Costas Fytiris has called for legislative changes to allow authorities to ban boat departures during severe weather, following the fatal Cape Greco incident where businessman Dimis Mavropoulos died after his boat struck rocks in a storm. Currently, no law permits such bans; authorities can only advise against sailing but cannot legally prevent it.
Fytiris emphasized the need for stricter regulations on anchorages, particularly prohibiting overnight stays in hazardous areas during bad weather. He acknowledged the complexity of introducing these measures, as they must balance safety concerns with impacts on tourism, fishing, and leisure activities.
The minister also praised the efficiency of Cyprus's search and rescue services in responding to the tragedy and highlighted ongoing cleanup efforts. Additionally, he supported the planned establishment of a Coast Guard to improve maritime safety coordination, currently managed by multiple agencies.
