Timur Turlov, founder and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp. and president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, is running for FIDE president in the September 26-27 election in Samarkand. His campaign emphasizes transforming FIDE into a service organization that offers equal access to development resources, clearer funding mechanisms, and practical support for over 200 member federations. Turlov is joined by five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand as his candidate for deputy president.
Turlov highlights his success in Kazakhstan, where chess was introduced to over 1,500 schools and 60,000 children, supported by sustainable funding models and major international events. His four key priorities are digital transformation, chess in education, financial sustainability, and institutional development, aiming to reduce administrative burdens and improve access to ratings, tournaments, and training through common digital infrastructure.
