Cyprus Begins Removal of Pollutants and Wrecks After Cape Greco Boat Sinkings
The Deputy Ministry of Shipping in Cyprus has initiated the immediate removal of pollutants, debris, and the wrecks of two boats, "Perla Bianca" and "Petsas I," which sank on August 29, 2026, near Cape Greco. A NAVTEX notice has been issued by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) to ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the affected area.
Tragically, Dimis Mavropoulos, the owner and operator of "Perla Bianca," lost his life in the incident. The ministry has extended its condolences to his family and is working closely with other authorities to safeguard the marine environment and human life at sea. The Deputy Ministry of Shipping is conducting the safety investigation into the sinking of "Perla Bianca" alongside the police, while the Cyprus Marine Casualty Investigation Board is handling the investigation of the passenger ferry "Petsas I."
