Cyprus experiences record-breaking rainfall in August with over 1000% increase
Cyprus recorded a staggering 1034% increase in rainfall for August, with an average of 30 millimetres compared to the normal 2.9mm for the month, the Meteorological Office announced. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Platania, which saw 83.9mm, a 655% increase from the typical 12.8mm.
Certain areas experienced even more extreme variations, with Frenaros reporting a 27,300% increase at 27.3mm and Xylotymbou 20,000% at 40mm, both exceeding 200 times the normal monthly rainfall. Apart from Pano Panayia and Paphos airport, all stations surpassed their usual levels significantly.
For the period from October 1, 2025, to the end of August 2026, total rainfall reached 608.3mm, equivalent to 122% of the normal for the same period, with every station nationwide exceeding 100% of the typical rainfall.
