Engomi and Archangelos suffer worst flood damage in Nicosia, urgent infrastructure projects planned
The Nicosia neighborhoods of Engomi and Archangelos experienced the most severe damage during weekend flooding, according to the region's disaster management authority. Studies are underway to address flooding causes, including incomplete stormwater systems and unbuilt retention lakes in Engomi. While immediate solutions are unlikely, new infrastructure projects such as the Vasilopotamos enclosed pipeline and a stormwater project near the GSP stadium are planned. Annual fees dedicated to stormwater repairs currently generate around €2 million.
Local leaders highlighted that fragmented stormwater networks across former municipalities complicate unified responses. Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos urged large-scale state-led interventions and improved coordination protocols between key agencies. Meanwhile, Strovolos Municipality continues efforts to manage flooding effects, awaiting a viability study for a long-term flood prevention project along the Pedieos river.
