The donation, covering his payment for September and tied to his 18 years of diplomatic service, is part of a pension waiver arrangement established by law last year that allows officials to waive prior pensions while serving in office. Christodoulides informed six councils across Cyprus that his monthly pension would be divided among six elderly care facilities over the next six years, allocating the payment to a different institution annually for as long as he remains president. He first announced his intention to donate his pension in August 2023 following criticism of receiving a civil service pension concurrently with the presidential salary. Subsequently, parliament passed legislation enabling officials to waive pension payments while in office.
Currently, Christodoulides earns a presidential gross salary of €14,401 per month, with a net take-home pay of €9,145. The pension waiver law was praised as an improvement to the system, although some officials noted that it did not address all concerns regarding pension arrangements for public servants.
