80th Anniversary Commemoration of British Detention Camps for Jewish Refugees in Tel Aviv
A memorial gathering in Tel Aviv marked 80 years since the British established detention camps in Cyprus for Jewish refugees during the British Mandate period. The event, organized by Cyprus Ma’apilim and Palmach House, brought together former detainees and descendants, featuring personal testimonies, music, and an exhibition of photographs and historical artifacts from the camps. Cyprus’ ambassador to Israel, Kornelios Korneliou, praised the efforts to preserve the history and experiences of the refugees.
The British camps, opened in August 1946, held over 53,000 Jewish refugees, mostly Holocaust survivors seeking to enter Mandatory Palestine in defiance of British immigration restrictions. Twelve camps operated until 1949, housing over 6,000 orphans and with some 2,000 children born there. The camps were primarily located at Caraolos near Famagusta and Dhekelia.
The detainees were gradually released and transported to Palestine, with the final group leaving Cyprus in February 1949 following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. An exhibition accompanying the event will remain open for one year, ensuring continued awareness of this significant chapter in Jewish and Cypriot history.
