Cyprus hosts Greek firefighting team under European pre-deployment programme
Cyprus is hosting a 21-man Greek forest firefighting team for the first time this year as part of the European pre-deployment programme. The Hellenic fire brigade team will be on operational alert in Cyprus throughout the first half of September. The forestry department is coordinating the mission and has arranged a programme to familiarize the Greek firefighters with Cyprus' forest firefighting and alert systems. Support for the Greek team will be jointly provided by the forestry department and civil defence during their stay. The European pre-deployment programme, operational since 2022, aims to enhance member states’ capacity to respond effectively and rapidly to forest fires. It allows participating countries to send firefighting teams to other member states during high-risk wildfire periods, offering extra operational assistance when needed.
