Cyprus Government Defends Advisory Council Amid Criticism Over Semi-Government Board Appointments
The Cyprus government has defended the advisory council's role in appointing members to semi-government boards amid ongoing criticism from opposition parties. Deputy government spokesman Yiannis Antoniou labeled the attacks as "unfair," emphasizing the council's creation aimed to enhance transparency and merit in public appointments. Antoniou admitted the system has "problems" but insisted it marked an improvement over previous practices dominated by party affiliations.
The controversy escalated following allegations that some appointments bypassed the advisory council, with claims that individuals were appointed without submitting applications. Akel called for a public explanation, expressing concerns that the council was being used as a mere formality for predetermined selections. The issue is now under review by the House institutions committee.
The government recently replaced Cyta board member Loizos Economides amid conflict of interest concerns, as he did not declare ties to the organisation during the appointment process. Union representatives condemned the appointment, questioning the advisory council’s diligence. Council chairman George Aresti clarified the body’s purely advisory role, noting final appointment decisions rest with relevant ministries. The cabinet approved approximately 85 new appointments to semi-state organisations earlier this week, including notable positions at EAC, Cyta, and CyBC.
