Justice Minister Defends Police Leadership, Highlights Urgent Need for New Prison and Reform Measures
Justice Minister Costas Fitiris has affirmed that while dialogue with police unions is important, operational control must remain with police leadership and his ministry amid rising tensions. He emphasized that unions have a right to express concerns, but final decisions on security matters are made by competent authorities and must be implemented.
Fitiris underscored the urgent necessity for a new prison complex, explaining that the existing facilities are outdated after 135 years, and that the new project aims to modernize the system through rehabilitation and reintegration programs. Although Mathiatis remains the preferred site, alternative locations are being considered carefully to avoid delays.
In response to the recent Limassol-Nicosia highway incident and broader challenges like organized crime and court delays, Fitiris highlighted ongoing reforms, including the new ‘‘Nestor’’ emergency response plan and the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime. He stressed the importance of operational effectiveness, inter-agency coordination, and measured success beyond arrest numbers, aiming to improve public safety and trust.
