Cyprus Natural Gas Expected to Supply Europe Starting Spring 2028
Cypriot natural gas is set to fuel the European market from spring 2028, Energy Minister Michalis Damianou announced in an exclusive Associated Press interview. The extensive natural gas field "Kronos," located off Cyprus’s southern coast, will be developed by partners TotalEnergies and Eni, marking the first time Eastern Mediterranean gas will be delivered to Europe. The plan includes constructing an 18-month pipeline connecting Kronos to Egypt’s extensive "Zohr" gas field infrastructure, where the gas will be processed and liquefied for shipment to Europe.
The project's cost-effectiveness stems from proximity to existing facilities in Egypt, with an estimated expenditure of 1.73 billion euros. While most of the gas will be sent to Europe, up to 20% may serve Egypt’s domestic energy needs. Cyprus currently hosts six gas fields, including "Glaucus" and "Pegasus," with ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy planning production by 2033. Separate initiatives aim to connect Cyprus and Israel to Europe’s electricity grid, although financial and bureaucratic challenges remain, possibly increasing costs for Cypriot consumers.
