Opposition Disy accuses government of politically motivated appointments to semi-government bodies
Opposition party Disy has accused the government of misleading the public regarding appointments to semi-governmental organisations, claiming the selections were politically motivated rather than merit-based. Disy spokesman Onoufrios Koullas said the government was "caught red-handed" and criticized President Nikos Christodoulides for previously participating in similar practices.
Disy contended that government appointees included party officials and associates of the president, some allegedly appointed "through the back door," dismissing claims of an objective evaluation process. The party framed the controversy as an issue of political culture and accountability rather than ideology.
The dispute intensified after opposition party Akel also raised concerns about bypassing advisory councils in appointments. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis noted the similarity in statements from Disy and Akel, suggesting a political alignment between the two parties against the government. The latest clash followed President Christodoulides’ comments responding to these criticisms.
