Polemidia poised to become a growing university town amid infrastructure challenges
Polemidia, one of Limassol's fastest-growing municipalities, is undergoing significant transformation driven by major private and public investments, including new university facilities and residential zones. Mayor Andros Theodorou envisions Polemidia evolving into a university town anchored by the Cyprus University of Technology’s expanding presence and new student residences in the Verengaria area.
However, rapid growth brings serious challenges, with traffic congestion identified as the municipality's biggest infrastructure problem. Efforts to alleviate traffic include prioritizing the Northern Bypass construction and the opening of the Anthoupolis project scheduled for September. Additionally, the municipality plans to create new parking spaces near university areas and convert old livestock zones into residential developments.
Other pressing issues include cleanliness, increased parking demand, and housing shortages exacerbated by numerous Turkish Cypriot-owned plots that limit development. Theodorou advocates for changes in land use policies and greater state support to address infrastructure and housing needs, aiming to make Polemidia more self-sufficient and responsive to residents' demands.
