Cyprus Environmental Authority approves Drousia quarry expansion near Akamas with strict conditions
Cyprus's Environmental Authority has approved the expansion of quarry activities in the Drousia community, adjacent to the Androlykou quarry zone and bordering the Natura 2000 protected Akamas Peninsula. The project, proposed by established operators Gennadios Theologou & Sons Ltd and Poullas Tsadiotis Ltd, covers nearly 50,000 square metres and aims to extract 900,000 cubic metres of limestone over 2.5 to 3 years under stringent environmental restrictions.
The Authority's Special Ecological Assessment highlighted that 31% of the site was already disturbed and that impacts would be local and temporary without significantly affecting nearby wildlife habitats, including bat colonies 1.1 to 1.5 km away. However, the application sparked strong opposition from environmental groups, citing risks to protected habitats, rare flora like the endangered Ophrys kotschyi orchid, and bird species, including the European Roller.
Special measures have been mandated, including protecting orchid populations with transplantation efforts, seasonal work restrictions to protect breeding birds, noise mitigation, terracing and replanting requirements, and strict operational controls to minimize environmental damage and preserve the Natura 2000 buffer zone.
