British Bases confirm legal procedures for new infrastructure project in Akrotiri despite local protests
The British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) authorities have reiterated their commitment to proceed with a modernization project in Akrotiri, including the installation of 68 new antennas and new facilities within environmentally protected zones. The project aims to upgrade infrastructure in the Akrotiri Salt Lake area and will follow all required legal and environmental procedures.
The SBA stated that any expansion involving community land acquisition will comply with existing laws and include consultations with affected landowners, as well as compensation where applicable. Environmental approval and public consultation processes are mandatory prerequisites before any construction work begins.
Responding to residents' health concerns related to radiofrequency emissions, the SBA referred to an independent scientific study which found no increased risk of cancer or related health issues. They also expressed willingness to co-fund new independent studies and to enhance monitoring systems in collaboration with Cyprus authorities. Protests by local residents are scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow from the village entrance.
