Nicosia Municipality Removes 2,300 Abandoned Vehicles, Plans to Collect 4,000 More
Nicosia Municipality has successfully removed 2,300 abandoned vehicles from various locations across the city and plans to collect an additional 4,000, Mayor Prountzos announced. These vehicles pose fire risks and contribute to pollution and vandalism in public and private spaces. The municipality is addressing the issue by contracting a private company annually to manage removals.
Once identified, abandoned vehicles receive a notice requiring owners to move them within three weeks. If owners fail to comply, the vehicles are either auctioned or destroyed as waste. Vehicles lacking valid registration or roadworthiness certificates are treated as end-of-life and sent to licensed facilities for destruction, while those in good standing are sold, with proceeds benefiting the municipality.
Mayor Prountzos emphasized that simply relocating vehicles within the city does not meet removal criteria; vehicles must be moved to legal, private areas to avoid further nuisance. The municipality also earns €200 for each vehicle recycled, contributing to its efforts to keep Nicosia clean and safe.
