Cyprus-Greece Sea Passenger Link Faces Uncertainty Without State Subsidy Renewal
The Cyprus-Greece sea passenger service, operated by Scandro Holding Ltd, is at risk of ending in 2027 unless the state subsidy is renewed, according to managing director Charalambos Manoli. The route, which started in 2022 with European Commission approval for a six-year subsidy, has struggled to become financially viable due to lower-than-expected passenger demand and the limited operating season from late May to early September.
Passenger numbers average 100 per crossing in June, rising to full capacity in August, but the short season and inability to carry cargo make it difficult to sustain the service year-round. Manoli highlighted rising fuel costs and upcoming EU carbon emission charges as further challenges that could increase operational expenses, requiring higher subsidies.
Despite these hurdles, bookings for 2026 are similar to current figures, showing consistent demand. Manoli hopes future tender processes and subsidy negotiations can take these factors into account to keep the link active, emphasizing the service’s importance despite it not functioning as a cruise ship but a passenger and vehicle ferry.
