Cyprus court dismisses asylum appeal of Cameroonian over inconsistent account of persecution
An administrative court in Cyprus has rejected the appeal of a 35-year-old Cameroonian asylum seeker after finding his claims insufficient to warrant international protection. The man, who entered Cyprus in March 2020, alleged he was abducted by Ambazonian separatists, detained by the Cameroonian army, and subsequently targeted by both sides during the ongoing conflict in Cameroon’s anglophone southwest.
However, the court ruled that his account was inconsistent, lacking critical details and coherence. It stated the narrative contained numerous gaps and ambiguities, failing to provide firsthand experiential elements necessary to establish a credible threat. The court concluded that his home city, Buea, was not affected by violence to an extent justifying refugee status.
The case highlights the challenges faced by asylum seekers from regions affected by conflict. While recognizing the wider security issues in Cameroon’s southwest, the court found the applicant did not meet the legal threshold for asylum or subsidiary protection in Cyprus.
