South Asian student violently robbed in pitch-black Nicosia area near Oxi roundabout
A 26-year-old South Asian student was violently ambushed and robbed early on August 1 in a dark parking lot near the Oxi roundabout in Nicosia. The student reported being attacked by a group of three to four men believed to be speaking Arabic, who assaulted them and stole their phone and keys before fleeing the scene. Despite screaming for help, the student said the area was deserted at 4:20am, with no assistance arriving.
The incident highlights concerns over poor lighting in this section of Konstantinou Palaiogolou Street, described by the victim as a 'massive hazard' due to its stark contrast with a nearby well-lit street. The victim sustained injuries and has filed a formal report with Nicosia Central Police and the Crime Investigation Department. Authorities noted challenges in identifying the perpetrators due to the lack of CCTV and the area’s darkness.
The student, identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community, warned others via social media to take precautions and avoid walking alone late at night in the area. Despite the trauma, the student usually felt safe there and believes the attack was random. Nicosia Municipality currently has no plans to improve lighting but encourages residents to submit complaints for review.
