Ersin Tatar accuses Turkish opposition leader of interfering in TRNC elections
Former Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar accused Turkish opposition leader Ozgur Ozel of undue interference in last year’s Turkish Cypriot leadership election, which resulted in Tatar’s defeat by Tufan Erhurman. Tatar claimed Ozel campaigned openly for Erhurman with a CHP delegation and said he has video and recording evidence to support his allegation. He contended that Turkish opposition parties should not participate in TRNC elections, questioning Ozel's involvement.
Ozgur Ozel, formerly CHP leader, expressed respect for the will of the Turkish Cypriot community before the election and emphasized the importance of respecting that will irrespective of political affiliation. After Erhurman’s landslide victory, he highlighted the significance of change and the free will of the Cypriot people.
In the lead-up to the election, Turkey’s AK Party officials campaigned for Tatar while President Erdogan later congratulated Erhurman post-election. Turkey continues to support renewed negotiations over the Cyprus issue, with upcoming talks between Erhurman and Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides scheduled for August 26, aligning with UN-backed confidence-building efforts.
