Google's Alphabet restructures AI leadership as Gemini model delays spark investor concerns

Google's parent company Alphabet has reshuffled its artificial intelligence leadership, moving Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis from daily management of Google DeepMind to a new group-wide chief scientist role. Hassabis, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry, will focus on advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI) research and its societal impact, while Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over DeepMind's daily operations and Gemini model development.

The changes come amid delays to the launch of the most advanced Gemini AI model, originally planned for June, which has raised investor worries about Google losing ground to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. Following the announcement, Alphabet shares dropped 4 percent. Meanwhile, four senior AI figures, including long-time DeepMind leader Jeff Dean, left to form a new public benefit company, Discovery Loop, with Google's support.

Hassabis will also dedicate more time to Isomorphic Labs, an AI-driven drug discovery firm, underscoring his commitment to healthcare applications of AI. The executive shuffle reflects Google’s bid to sharpen its AI competitiveness and accelerate product focus as the race intensifies in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
