Kuwait donates $50,000 to UN Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus

The State of Kuwait has donated US$50,000 (€43,319) to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, as announced by the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp). This latest contribution brings Kuwait's total donations to the CMP to €243,750 since 2014. The funds will support the CMP’s mission to identify and return the remains of missing individuals to their families by 2026, helping to resolve long-standing uncertainties for relatives.

The CMP was established in 1981 and became operational in 2006 to locate and identify the remains of 2,002 people who went missing during Cyprus’ intercommunal conflicts. As of the end of May 2024, the committee has exhumed 1,719 bodies and identified 1,298 individuals, including 317 Turkish Cypriots and 764 Greek Cypriots. So far this year, the remains of 18 Turkish Cypriots have been identified.

The CMP relies on donations from nation states and international organizations to continue its work in bringing closure to families affected by past conflicts in Cyprus.
