Stefanos Evangelides, a writer and law lecturer currently visiting Cyprus from Athens, has authored two books detailing notorious crimes committed by women in colonial Cyprus during the early 20th century. His works, Styliani X and Medeas and Clytemnestras, offer a deep exploration of the brutal daily life for women and children on the island up to the 1950s.
Evangelides highlights that while the books focus on female perpetrators, women in that era were predominantly victims of domestic violence and societal oppression. Among the cases is the 1931 murder of four-year-old Maria Stylli by her mother and stepfather, both of whom were swiftly convicted and executed. The stories reveal the grim realities of child labor and abuse faced by families at the time.
One startling tale is that of Styllou Christofi, who killed her daughter-in-law in London in 1954 and was executed. Evangelides underlines the pervasive harshness faced by women, often powerless against abusive husbands who controlled their lives, all while social norms silenced them to protect family honor.
