Cyprus retail trade volume falls 1% in June 2026 despite 5% annual growth

Retail trade volume in Cyprus contracted by 1 percent in June 2026 compared to May, as reported by Eurostat. This monthly decline followed a significant 3.7 percent increase in May, and a previous drop of 0.9 percent in April. Despite the recent monthly downturn, Cyprus’s retail trade volume showed a solid 5 percent year-on-year increase when compared with June 2025.

Across the broader euro area, retail trade volume decreased by 0.3 percent month-on-month in June 2026, reversing growth trends seen in May. The European Union also experienced a slight decline of 0.1 percent in retail sales volume during the same period. Year-on-year, the euro area showed a 0.7 percent increase and the EU a 1.2 percent rise in retail trade volume.

Sector-wise, food, drinks, and tobacco sales declined slightly in both the euro area and EU, while automotive fuel sales increased by around 1.5 percent monthly. Among EU countries, Finland, Romania, and Germany recorded the largest monthly retail trade declines, whereas Luxembourg, Portugal, Croatia, and Sweden saw gains. Annual growth was strongest in Luxembourg, Sweden, and Bulgaria, with Romania and Austria registering declines.
